How to Unclog Your Nose

Clogged, stuffy noses can have many causes, from a cold or the flu to various allergies, stress and air pollution. In addition, some medications such as birth control pills and diuretics, can also contribute to stuffy noses. While usually not a serious condition, the inability to breathe air through the nostrils can cause sinus, eye and cheek pressure and pain, as well as headache. It can also be inconvenient, annoying and make it hard to get enough rest while sleeping. Breathing through the mouth can cause unpleasant dryness and sore, chapped lips.

Instructions

  1. Use Nasal Spray

    • 1

There are natural nasal saline sprays that can moisten the nasal membranes, help unclog your nose and make breathing easier. You can make your own saline spray by mixing one quarter of a teaspoon of baking soda, one quarter of a teaspoon of table salt with eight ounces of warm water. Use a nose dropper or atomizer to squirt the solution into the nostrils.

Try a neti pot. The neti pot is a simple device that can be found in most drug and health food stores. Using a mix of warm salt water in the pot can gently clear congestion. According to James T. Li, M.D., in an article for the Mayo Clinic, with regular use, the neti pot has also been more effective for allergy and sinus problems than some over-the-counter medications for some patients.

Breathe in steam or use a warm compress. Steam from a kettle, a pot on the stove, a steaming device or in the shower can be very soothing to clogged noses. When breathing in steam from a pot, carefully lean over the pot with a towel draped over the head. A warm compress on the face applied right below the eyes can provide relief and help unclog your nose.

Use breathing strips. Breathing strips, available at most grocery and drug stores, can open up nasal passages. They are particularly good for use at night to help you sleep.

    • 5

Try aromatherapy. Essential oils such as eucalyptus used in aromatherapy can be a pleasant way to alleviate stuffy noses. The oils can also be added to nasal spray or in a steam bath.

    • 6

Use a humidifier or vaporizer. Regular use of a humidifier or vaporizer can be very effective in soothing stuffy noses. Essential oils can also be added for extra relief.

    • 7

Drink fluids and tea. Fluids like water, juice and tea, consumed regularly, can be beneficial in clearing a stuffy nose.

    • 8

Try eating spicy foods. Spices such as cayenne pepper can be effective in clearing clogged sinuses. Adding certain spices to food, such as soups, may also help clear up a clogged nose.
