Prevent Sinus With a Home Dehumidifier

According to the National Institute of Health, dehumidifiers reduce congestion in the sinus cavity. The sinus cavity is a large empty space located behind the eyes and nose. It is constantly secreting mucus to moisten and cleanse itself. When the sinuses become irritated or inflamed, they swell and over-produce mucus leading to congestion and sinus pressure. An effective way to sooth irritated sinuses is with a dehumidifier.
  1. Use It as You Sleep

    • Purchase a dehumidifier at any big box store for around $30. Run the dehumidifier as you sleep. Set it to maintain 40 percent humidity in the air. Turn the dehumidifier on before going to bed and let it run all night to maintain the proper moisture in the air that will sooth and moisten the sinus cavity. Be sure to turn the dehumidifier off every morning because too dry of an environment can irritate the sinus cavity. Keep the dehumidifiers away from children as it can become very cold around the coil.

    Add Essential Oils

    • Use a dehumidifier during the day whenever the sinuses are severely congested or it is very humid outside. Add 5 to 7 drops of eucalyptus oil, 5 to 7 drops of peppermint, 5 to 7 drops of tea tree oil and 5 to 7 drops of grapefruit seed extract to the water basin before running. The essential oils will fill the room with pleasant scents that will encourage the sinus cavity to open.

    Use with Caution

    • Use a dehumidifier to relieve congestion from the common cold, sinus infections and the flu. Use caution when operating and running a dehumidifier as it can encourage mold and mildew growth, which can adversely affect your sinus condition. Keep away from pets and small children as they can easily get into the water basin or tip the unit over. Do not place a dehumidifier on a table or dresser as the vibration from the motor of the fan can cause the unit to move slightly and eventually fall from a high place. Always use on the floor about 4 to 6 feet away from you when you are asleep.
