Specific Herbal Tea to Aid in Sinus Infections

Sinus infections, also known as sinusitis, are characterized by swollen sinuses, causing heavy pressure in the head and difficulty breathing. Colds, bacteria, allergies or fungus can cause sinusitis. Herbal teas can effectively ease the duration and lessen symptoms.
  1. Types

    • Herbs that are used to treat sinusitis include licorice, eucalyptus, peppermint, ginger, lemon balm and echinacea.

    Function

    • Licorice and peppermint are anti-inflammatory, eucalyptus clears mucus buildup, ginger reduces headaches, lemon balm can combat some types of viruses and bacteria, and echinacea increases immune response.

    Considerations

    • If none of the above teas are compatible with your palate, consider that any type of hot tea provides steam that moisturizes the nose and sinuses and causes mucus to move out of the body.

    Prevention/Solution

    • If you are prone to sinus infections, consuming foods or drinks high in antioxidants, especially vitamins C and E, can help to prevent recurring infections. Teas containing pomegranate or blueberry provide protective antioxidants.

    Warning

    • If you have an allergy to ragweed, avoid echinacea.
