Is Mucinex Safe to Use?

Mucinex is a common, over-the-counter drug used to treat coughing and some other respiratory ailments. While it does have some side effects, it is safe to use in most cases.
  1. How It Works

    • Mucinex increases the amount of mucus in the upper respiratory tract, soothing pain and easing coughs.

    Risk of Nausea

    • Mucinex can occasionally cause nausea and even vomiting. This risk can be dramatically reduced by taking it along with meals.

    Risk of Kidney Stones

    • In some cases, especially when overused, Mucinex can cause the formation of kidney stones. Drinking lots of fluids while taking Mucinex can greatly reduce this risk.

    Risk to Pregnant Women

    • The safety of Mucinex for pregnant women has not been established. Thus, although there is probably not a large risk, this drug should be avoided during pregnancy, unless a doctor considers that the utility may outweigh any risks.

    Bottom Line

    • Mucinex carries very little risk and is useful in the treatment of a variety of conditions. While it is advised that a patient drink lots of fluids while taking Mucinex, it should be considered almost completely safe.
