Do Warm Steam Humidifiers Work for Sinuses?

According to the National Institutes of Health, both warm and cool steam humidifiers reduce congestion in the sinus cavity. The sinus cavity is a large, empty space located behind the eyes and nose. It is constantly secreting mucus to moisten and cleanse itself. When the sinuses become irritated or inflamed they swell and over-produce mucus, leading to congestion and sinus pressure. An effective way to soothe irritated sinuses is with a warm steam humidifier.
  1. Use It as You Sleep

    • Purchase a warm steam humidifier at any discount department store for around $30. Fill up the tank with cool water and adjust the humidifier setting to produce 40 percent humidity. Turn the humidifier on before going to bed and let it run all night to maintain the proper moisture in the air to soothe and moisten the sinus cavity. Be sure to turn the humidifier off every morning because warm steam is the perfect environment for the growth of mold and mildew. Keep the unit away from children because it can become very hot.

    Add Essential Oils

    • Use a warm steam humidifier during the day whenever the sinuses are severely congested. Add five to seven drops each of eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil, tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract to the water basin before filling with water. Fill the reservoir with warm water to help the oils mix well with the water. Turn the humidifier on high with your head at a comfortable distance above it. Place a bath towel over your head to trap the steam and breathe normally for five minutes. Repeat as often as needed to maintain healthy sinuses.

    Use with Caution

    • Use caution when operating and running a warm steam humidifier; it can encourage mold and mildew growth which can adversely affect the health of your sinuses. Keep the humidifier away from pets and small children because a warm humidifier can cause burns. Do not place a humidifier on a table or dresser; the vibration from the motor of the fan can cause the unit to move slightly and eventually fall from a high place. Always use on the floor about 4 to 6 feet away from where you are sleeping.
