How to Prevent Communicable Diseases From Spreading
Communicable diseases such as the cold and flu are spread through the air and via touch. By taking preventable measures, you can keep these contagious viruses from spreading to you. If you become ill, you can also keep from passing your illness on to others. This is particularly important for young children and the elderly, who do not have the strong immune systems of healthy adults.Things You'll Need
- Immunization
- Antibacterial hand sanitizer
- Face mask

1
Get immunized when needed. Every fall, children, adults and the elderly should get a flu shot. Children should also receive all immunizations on schedule. Most shots are given to those under the age of 14. Refer to the link "Immunization Schedule" under "References" for a list of immunizations and when children should receive them.

2
Wash your hands regularly to prevent the spread of germs. Wash your hands after using the bathroom, after playing outdoors, after blowing your nose and before eating snacks and meals. Carry with you an antibacterial hand sanitizer for times when soap and water are not available.

3
Stay home from work or school when you are sick with a communicable disease. If you must leave the house when you are sick, wear a medical face mask that covers your mouth and nose. If you are particularly susceptible to illness (because of your age or a suppressed immune system), wearing a medical mask will help you avoid getting sick.

4
Do not share items with other people. Illnesses can be spread through using another person's drinking glass, silverware and cosmetics. If you are near someone who is sick and you come in contact with their items, do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Wash your hands as soon as possible.
