Medication for a Runny Nose

Runny noses can occur as part of a cold or flu bug, as a result of allergies or in response to a sinus infection. The medication used to treat it depends on the cause.
  1. Antihistamines

    • Antihistamines (purchased over the counter) are the most common medication to treat runny noses, especially those that arise from an allergy. Prescription versions are available for particularly stubborn cases.

    Cromolyn

    • Cromolyn is available by prescription and keep the nose from running when allergens are in the air.

    Steroids

    • Steroid nasal sprays and other steroid medication can be prescribed in instances in which antihistamines don't work.

    Cold Medications

    • In cases in which a runny nose is caused by a cold, standard cold medication such as Benadryl may be effective. Homemade cold remedies such as hot tea or chicken soup may also be effective.

    Saline Sprays

    • Saline sprays (available at most pharmacies) help fight runny noses caused by sinus infections. You can also make your own saline spray by mixing 1/4 tsp. of salt with 4 oz. of water.
