The Average Cost of Ear Infection Antibiotics

"Middle ear infections, also known as otitis media, are among the most common illnesses of early childhood," according to the Mayo Clinic. Ear infections are the result of inflammation and irritation in the middle ear that causes an over-production of white blood cells, leading to infection. Ear infections can be painful and very uncomfortable for children and adults alike. The most common way of treating an ear infection is with prescribed antibiotics.
    • Ear infection

    Background

    • Once an ear infection sets in, it is very difficult for the body to heal itself naturally, so antibiotics are used to kill the bacteria causing the infection. Antibiotics kill all bacteria in the body, good and bad, and typically completely cure an ear infection within 10 days. If an ear infection goes untreated, it can spread to other areas of the ear, the sinus cavity and the chest.

    Common Drug

    • The most common drug used to treat an ear infection is amoxicillin. Amoxicillin is used for most minor ear infections and is prescribed for 10 to 14 days. Aside from amoxicillin, other common antibiotics used to treat an ear infection are penicillin, augmentin (amoxicillin with an anti-bacterial drug) and Batrim, an ulfonamide drug combined with trimethoprim for children who are allergic to amoxicillin and penicillin.

    Cost

    • Amoxicillin typically costs $15.00 for a 10 day supply if an individual chooses the generic brand. Penicillin is about the same cost, depending on the pharmacy. Augmentin is about $75 for 150 units and unfonamide combined with trimethoprim (Batrim) is about $45 for 30 tablets.

    Considerations

    • Many pharmacies offer free generic antibiotics during cold and flu season. There are no income requirements or any other restrictions. A person simply needs a prescription from a doctor and should request the free generic drug at the time of placing the order. Many online pharmacies offer discounts on the prices listed above but come with the disadvantage of the mailing time period.

    Low Income

    • If an individual is unable to afford the prescription antibiotics for herself or children, she should talk with her doctor about Federal and State programs that can assist in covering the cost. Medical clinics run by the state will offer free programs for people with low income. There is always a way to get the prescription filled.
