Nasal Irrigation for Sinus Infections

Although severe sinusitis typically requires a prescription medication to wipe out a stubborn infection, most sinus infections benefit from nasal irrigation (also called nasal lavage or nasal washing).
  1. History

    • Nasal irrigation is an ancient Ayurvedic method of cleansing the nasal passages. Its history is based in the practice of yoga and it has been practiced in India for thousands of years.

    Function

    • Nasal irrigation is used on a daily basis to maintain optimum sinus health by keeping the nasal passages moist and clear of harmful bacterias and pollens.

    Method

    • Washing the nasal cavities can be accomplished most effectively with a neti pot; a saline solution flows from the pot, in one nostril, through the sinus cavities and out the other nostril.

    Benefits

    • The effects of performing a nasal wash include clearer nasal passages, easier breathing, less sinus pressure, fewer common colds and nasal allergies, and reduced use of sinus-related medications.

    Warning

    • Although the saline solution can be made at home (1/8 tsp. salt mixed well with 8 oz. water), use noniodized salt and purified water. If tap water is used, boil it and let it cool to near room temperature. Otherwise, distilled or bottled water is a safe, chlorine-free choice.
