When to Get Tonsils Removed
A person does not actually need their tonsils, so in the past they were frequently removed. The surgery to remove tonsils is called a tonsillectomy. Before the tonsils come out consider the pros and cons. Lots of ice cream after surgery is one of the pros.-
Frequent Sore Throats
-
If you suffer from frequent sore throats, a doctor will sometime suggest removing the tonsils. If the tonsils are often inflamed and infected, surgical removal is again considered.
Large Tonsils
-
If tonsils are too large and affect breathing, speech and swallowing, they are often removed. Large tonsils may cause mouth breathing, snoring, and may in some cases be life-threatening.
Debris
-
The tonsils have many nooks, pits and pockets. Debris can collect in these groves and cause infections, pain and foul breath. When antibiotics do not offer relief and results, removal is suggested.
Tumors
-
In some instances, lymphomas or tumors can form on the tonsils. This is cause for immediate removal.
Age
-
Children are most affected by tonsil pain and ailments. Some outgrow the problem, while some benefit from early removal. Comfort, better sleep, improved speech and breathing are some advantages.
Complications
-
As with any surgical procedure some complications may occur and should be considered. Bleeding, infection and anesthesia risk are some ramifications. Older patients often have more post-op complaints.
