Tonsil Infections
Tonsils are the masses of tissue on each side of the throat that trap bacteria and viruses. Sometimes the tonsils may not be able to fight off the bacteria or virus, leaving them infected and inflamed. These infections are commonly known as tonsillitis.-
Causes
-
Most cases of tonsil infection are caused by contagious viruses, including the virus that causes mononucleosis. Although less common, some infections are caused by bacterial infections like A streptococci, also known as strep throat.
Symptoms
-
Symptoms of tonsillitis include red tonsils, sore throat, painful swallowing, white patches on tonsils, headache, fever and chills, enlarged glands and loss of voice.
Treatment
-
In most cases, a tonsil infection is caused by a virus and can usually be treated at home with over-the-counter pain relievers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories along with plenty of fluids and rest. If the infection is caused by bacteria, a visit to the doctor and a prescription for an antibiotic will most likely be necessary.
Prevention/Solution
-
Because viruses and bacteria that cause tonsil infections are easily passed from person to person, it's important to wash your hands often if you're around someone who is infected. Also keep your hands away from your eyes or mouth and take vitamin C regularly to keep your immune system strong.
Helpful Home Remedies
-
Gargling with salt water, drinking hot tea with lots of honey and lemon, humidifying the air and resting the voice all help relieve the pain associated with tonsillitis.
