Sore Throat & Cough Remedies

From time to time, we must all endure the discomforts and vexation associated with sore throats and coughing. Although these are not life-threatening health problems, they certainly have the potential to disrupt our daily activities and routines if they are not managed well. Fortunately, there are a number of effective remedies.
  1. Inhalation

    • Inhaling the steam from hot water can help to clear the airways and loosen the mucous in the throat and lungs. Inhalation also eases the irritation associated with sore throats and coughs. Adding a few drops of eucalyptus into a pan of boiling water and inhaling the vapor will work wonders in opening the air passages in the chest and nose. To derive maximum benefits from inhalation, bend over a bucket or basin of hot water and drape a towel over your head to prevent steam from escaping. Inserting a few drops of aromatherapy oils such as eucalyptus, cypress, cedar, jasmine, myrrh and peppermint into the hot water is also beneficial.

    Food Items

    • Press a few bulbs of garlic and some ginger and mix the juice with hot water. You can also add in some fresh lime or lemon juice and a spoonful of honey. The honey has a soothing effect on the throat and can ease coughing. Hot and spicy food items have a beneficial effect in loosening the mucous created by sore throats and coughs. Eat hot chili peppers, spicy foods and horseradish. Bear in mind that other foods have the effect of increasing mucous production. Avoid meat, fried and fatty foods and dairy products like milk, cheese, yogurt and butter.

    Fluid Intake

    • Drinking plenty of water is very beneficial. Water is a natural expectorant and highly effective in thinning the mucous and loosening the cough. Along with water, it helps to drink lots of fresh fruit and vegetable juices since these are rich in various vitamins, minerals and enzymes and will give you a great nutritional boost. Vitamin C, for instance, is very helpful in fighting off infections and is highly available in most fruits. Also drink plenty of hot herbal teas.

    Zinc

    • Zinc is believed to have a definite healing impact in cases of sore throat and cough. Research studies have shown that zinc helps to reduce the severity and duration of the ailment, but other studies have shown that is not the case. However, zinc is also known to boost the immune system and can, therefore, prove beneficial in cases of sore throat and cough, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

    Herbal Remedies

    • Herbal remedies are well known for the healing impact in various health conditions, including sore throat and cough. There are several natural supplements that work effectively in reducing the symptoms of sore throat and coughs. Holy Basil and Licorice, for instance, help in combating infection, boost immunity and have a soothing effect on a sore throat.
