Cold Scratchy Throat Remedies

A scratchy throat is one of the unfortunate symptoms of the common cold. A scratchy throat can make it difficult to eat and drink and a persistent scratchy throat can even start to cause issues with talking. If you are dealing with a sore or scratchy throat, there are a few things you can do to ease the pain.
  1. Gargle Warm Salt Water

    • If the scratching in your throat is due to swelling, then gargling with some warm salt water can help reduce or eliminate the scratchiness in your throat. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt into an 8-ounce glass or warm (not hot water) and gargle with it every hour to help eliminate the pain.

    Get a Vaporizer or Humidifer

    • Using a vaporizer or humidifier in the room while you sleep can help moisturize your throat and relieve scratchiness.

    Drink Plenty of Fluids

    • Staying hydrated can help reduce the scratchiness in your throat. While it may be uncomfortable, try drinking as much water as possible to make sure your body has the fluids it needs to work through your illness and allow your throat to heal.

    Warm Tea and Honey

    • Warm herbal tea, such as green tea or even a simple black tea can help soothe a sore throat. Adding honey to the tea can be soothing and relieve any swelling or pain in your throat. Make sure to allow your tea to cool a bit before drinking it in order to make sure you don't burn the already tender tissue in your throat.

    Throat Lozenges

    • There are a variety of throat lozenges on the market that include a small amount of local anesthetic to numb your throat and relieve pain. If your scratchy throat becomes especially bothersome, consider adding lozenges as part of your treatment plan.
