Home Treatments of Sore Throat
A sore throat is often attributed to a cold or flu. It can be highly aggravating, as it affects your ability to eat, drink, and talk. A number of home treatments are known to soothe the discomfort associated with a sore throat.-
Hard Candies
-
Allowing hard candies to dissolve in your mouth can help soothe a sore throat. The excess saliva produced when eating candy will help reduce the scratching and soreness you feel in your throat. This treatment can be used as needed, and works well for those who do not like to take medicine.
Salt Water
-
Gargling salt water is an effective home treatment for a sore throat. Mix one teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of warm water. Gargle 3 to 4 mouthfuls of the mixture as needed to help soothe your throat.
Herbal Teas
-
Warm herbal teas are not only soothing for a sore throat, but some can help also with irritation. Including licorice, honeysuckle, or slippery elm to the tea can help relieve the irritation in the throat. The heat of the liquid will coat the throat and help prevent dryness. Herbal teas are recommended to be consumed 2 to 3 times per day.
Garlic
-
If the sore throat is caused by a viral infection, garlic is an effective home treatment. It helps the body fight viruses, which will provide fast relief for the pain in your throat. Fresh garlic can be added to each meal to help battle the infection. Garlic pills can also be taken if you do not like the taste.
