Flu Remedies for Children
The flu is a contagious infection of the nose, throat and lungs that accounts for 36,000 U.S. deaths every year. High-risk groups typically include children, the elderly and chronically ill individuals.-
Causes
-
The flu results from one of three types of influenza, spread by coughing, sneezing or sharing contaminated objects. Recovery normally occurs within two weeks, with or without antibiotics.
General Measures
-
Sick children should get lots of rest, plenty of fluids and a simplified, lightened diet. Maintain their breathing comfortable with a humidifier, and keep their nose clean with saline nose drops.
Natural Remedies
-
A tincture with any of the following herbs can support the immune system: Echinacea, garlic, lemon balm, elder blossoms or thyme.
Nonprescription Treatment
-
Over-the-counter remedies include decongestants, nasal sprays, cough drops, cough syrup and pain relievers' children formulations. Never give aspirin to children with flu-like symptoms, especially fever.
Prevention
-
A yearly vaccine is recommended for high-risk people and some prescription antiviral drugs can shorten the disease course when administered within 48 hours of onset of symptoms.
Warning
-
In children, emergency signs include trouble breathing, bluish skin, not drinking enough fluids, excessive lethargy, excessive irritability, fever with a rash, recurring flu-like symptoms with fever and worse cough.
