What Are the Treatments for a Sore Throat?
A sore throat is a terrible ailment, causing painful swallowing and discomfort if accompanied by a cough. Unfortunately, often patience is needed as nothing can be cured in a day. A few treatments might work to ease your symptoms.-
Gargle with Saltwater
-
Gargling with salt water has long been a treatment for a sore throat as the salt kills the bacteria in your throat. Stir approximately 1 tbsp. salt (regular table salt will do) per 4 oz. hot water until the salt has dissolved. When the temperature of the saltwater is adequate for gargling, take the gargle water as long as you can tolerate. The water should be warm, but not so hot that you burn the back of your throat. It is recommended to do this 2 or 3 times and repeat at least twice a day.
Tea
-
Tea soothes a sore throat, as does a warm mixture of honey and lemon juice. There are many homeopathic teas available as well. One tea that can be found at most grocery stores is called Throat Coat, a tea produced by a company called Traditional Medicinals. This tea is an effective tea to drink throughout the day when you have a sore throat and seems to promote overall throat health.
Over-the-Counter Remedies
-
A variety of over-the-counter throat sprays and syrups aid in the easing and treating of a sore throat. When in doubt, ask a pharmacist for his recommendation. Syrups and sprays can help kill bacteria and soothe the throat. For more serious pain, a prescription from a doctor may be necessary. It is always wise to consult your physician to rule out strep or another type of infection.
