Foods to Prevent Colds & Flu

According to the Center for Disease Control, roughly 5 to 20 percent of the population contracts the flu each year, and more than 200,000 are hospitalized for cold and flu symptoms. There are a variety of foods that can be consumed to help prevent and treat cold and flu symptoms.
  1. Boosting the Immune System

    • Colds and flu symptoms are caused by viruses and cannot be treated by antibiotics. The only thing that can beat a cold or flu is the body's immune system. It is important to consume healthy foods that will help boost and maintain the immune system to keep it effective in fighting colds and the flu.

    Warm Liquids

    • As a cold or flu typically includes fever symptoms, it is wise to drink warm teas and thin soups at the onset of a fever. These foods will help nourish the body without providing sugars and additives that may impede the body's ability to fight the symptoms. Caffeine-free teas such as chamomile or herb teas are best for a flu or cold patient. Hot soups such as chicken noodle or clear broth will help clear airways and congested nasal passages.

    Garlic

    • Garlic contains powerful antioxidant properties and also contains an agent known as alliin. Alliin acts as a powerful, natural decongestant and aids in the removal of infected mucus associated with the cold or flu.

    Citrus Fruits

    • Citrus fruits are high in vitamin C and help boost the immune system to protect from colds and flu symptoms. Citrus fruits are also a natural way to provide the body with healthy sugars.

    Ginger

    • Ginger, also a natural antioxidant, has healing properties that soothe sore throats and aid in the clearing of passageways, is best consumed in the form of warm tea. Fresh ginger root can be grated and steeped in boiling water for five minutes to create a healthy tea full of antioxidants.

    Foods to Avoid

    • To prevent or manage flu symptoms, it is best to avoid junk foods such as high-fat chips and snacks, as well as high-sugar foods such as ice cream, candy and other sweets. Caffeine should be avoided, as should alcohol, which can dehydrate the body of its much needed fluids.
