Sinus Pressure Remedy
Sinus pressure can form when the nasal cavity becomes filled with mucus. This typically results in an infection, which increases the production of the thick mucus and swells the sinus passages so that the mucus cannot easily pass through. Relieving the sinus pressure is imperative to reduce the discomfort felt during a sinus infection. Finding a sinus pressure remedy that works for you may take some trial and error.-
Steam
-
The steam of hot water will help open your sinus passageways. Steam thins the mucus and allows it to drain from the nasal cavity. Create steam by boiling a pot of water on the stove or taking a 15-minute shower using water warm enough to fog up the bathroom mirror. Use a humidifier throughout the night, especially in the drier months of the year, to help you sleep better. Experiment with both cool and warm mist humidifiers to find which one allows you to breathe better, as people vary in their preferences.
Staying Hydrated
-
Getting plenty of fluids each day when sick can help relieve sinus pressure. Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water daily thins the mucus so that it doesn't clog the sinus cavity. Keeping your body hydrated also promotes a stronger immune system, which is needed to fight any infections and to stay healthy.
Nasal Irrigation
-
Irrigating the nasal cavity involves flushing the area with salt water to remove any mucus buildup and to help reduce sinus pressure. This involves the use of a bulb syringe to squirt the water into the nostrils.
Fill a bowl with 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 2 cups of lukewarm water. Fill the bulb with the salt water, squeeze out any air, and gently insert into your nostril. Tilt your head slightly down and position your face over the sink. Squeeze the entire contents of the bulb into your nasal passage. Squirt one complete bulb into each nostril, and allow to drain.
