Cough Suppressant Home Remedies

Coughing is not an ailment alone, but a symptom of an underlying problem. For most people, a common cause of coughing is a cold or sinus problem. But you don't always have to run to the nearest drugstore to reduce or cure that cough. There are cough suppressant home remedies that you can try.
  1. Eucalyptus

    • Eucalyptus is an herb found to help with coughing. It is very soothing to an irritated throat, and can help reduce bronchial contractions. For best results, eucalyptus should be fresh when added to tea. If fresh leaves are not available, you can purchase eucalyptus oil and added a few drops of it to a cup of tea. Drinking 3-4 cups of eucalyptus tea each day will help reduce your cough.

    Hydration

    • Staying hydrated can help your body fight the infection and irritation making you want to cough. Eight to 10 glasses of water should be consumed per day while your feeling under the weather to help suppress the tickle in your throat, as well as help thin any mucus lodged in your throat or nasal passages.

    Avoid Dairy Products

    • Products made from milk can help increase phlegm production, which can keep your cough going strong. Avoid these foods while you are sick to assist with suppressing your cough. Also, coughing can be a symptom of a dairy allergy, especially if you feel the need to cough when you aren't otherwise feeling sick or congested.

    Eliminate Congestion

    • Sinus drainage and congestion is often the cause of your cough. Treating the thick mucus can be a helpful cough suppressant. Unclog your nasal cavity by inhaling the steam of a boiling pot of water, hot shower, or a vaporizer. Nasal irrigation can also help reduce the build up of phlegm.
