Natural Ways to Relieve Congestion

Head congestion is bothersome. Head congestion happens when our sinuses are unable to drain and there is a buildup of mucus within the sinus cavities. Head congestion makes it impossible to breathe through the nose. Congestion can be caused by allergies, colds, lack of exercise, lying down for long periods of time and lack of hydration. There are alternatives to taking medication to help relieve sinus or head congestion.
  1. Hot Liquids

    • Drinking hot liquids or eating hot broth and soups will cause an increase in body temperature. When the temperature of our inner core is heated, in response, the nose will begin to run. Whenever the nose begins to run, it will relieve pressure in the sinuses. This will also relieve the overall pressure within the head. Immediate relief can be felt.

    Cold Feet.

    • Start by warming your feet. Take a hot shower (which can also relieve congestion with the steam) or a hot bath. Get a pair of clean socks and put them in ice water. Squeeze out any excess water and put them on your feet. Blood will go to the feet to warm the feet. This helps relieve the congestion and can also help if you have a headache.

    Irrigation

    • Irrigating the sinuses helps allow them to drain. Start by taking a bowl filled with warm salty water. Use the hand to scoop up the water and bring it to your nose. Inhale gently and allow the water to drain back out. This can also be done with a dropper or a nose suction that is found in the infant section of most drug stores. Repeat this several times if needed. It may sting, but this will moisten the tissues and can help shrink the inflamed areas, creating relief.
