How to Use Dristan

Dristan is an over-the-counter medication that is used to relieve nasal congestion caused by a cold, hay fever, allergies and sinusitis. It works by compressing the blood vessels in the nose. This brings down the swelling and congestion. Dristan is readily available at drugstores, discount stores and grocery stores. The nasal spray and tablet form provide only temporary relief so long-term nasal problems may require a visit to the doctor for a more permanent solution.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase Dristan in nasal spray or caplet form. If several people are going to need Dristan and you are using the nasal spray each person should have their own personal bottle to avoid contamination.

    • 2

If you are using the nasal spray, blow the nose gently to relieve it of as much mucus as possible beforehand.

    • 3

Place one finger on the side of the nose that is not getting the Dristan and hold it closed. Place the tip of the Dristan bottle into the opposite nostril, keeping your head upright. Breathe in deeply through the nose as you spray the Dristan up into the open nasal cavity. Spray two to three times. Repeat with the opposite nostril. You may repeat this procedure up to two times in 24 hours. Rinse the top of the Dristan bottle in hot water after using it.

Take one to two caplets of Dristan with a glass of water if you are using the tablet form. Repeat as needed every four hours. Don't take more than six caplets in a 24-hour period.
