Take over-the-counter decongestants. If you suspect your congested nose is due to allergies, opt for allergy medication that contains antihistamines. If you have a cold, choose a cold medication with decongestant properties.

    • 2

Use nose spray. You can find these sprays over the counter in most drugstores. They work to thin mucus secretions, helping to relieve your congested nose. You should only use nasal decongestant sprays for three days at a time. Using them for longer can actually worsen your congestion.

    • 3

Fill a bowl with boiling water. Place a towel over your head and hold your head over the bowl, breathing deeply. As you inhale the steam, it will moisten your nasal passages, helping mucus to move. Do this multiple times per day for five to 10 minutes at a time.

Drink lots of clear liquids. They help to thin mucus secretions, allowing it to pass more easily from your body. Water is the best for this, however, you can also drink other clear fluids such as juices, teas and broths. Hot liquids will help to relieve congestion more aggressively than cold liquids.

Elevate your head while you sleep. Place an extra pillow or two underneath your head. The elevation will help to drain mucus from your nose.

    • 6

Sleep with a humidifier by your bed. Humidifiers moisten the air, which helps to soothe congested nasal passages.
