Remedies for Cold Sores on the Tongue

Cold sores are a result of the herpes simplex virus. These sores can be found anywhere inside of the mouth, on the tongue and outside of the mouth. The sores are painful and look like small blisters. The blisters can pop and ooze liquid. While there is no official cure for a cold sore on the tongue, there are some remedies to speed up the healing process.

Instructions

    • 1

Use an over-the-counter ointment or cream such as Abreva, so you won't have to wait for a doctor's appointment or a pharmacist to fill your prescription. Use the Abreva as soon as you notice the cold sore on your tongue.

Visit your a doctor and get a prescription medication such as Denavir. Prescription medications are much stronger than over-the-counter ones, so if you find the over-the-counter medicine just isn't cutting it, you may need the Denavir. This drug will help with the burning and pain of the cold sore, while reducing its duration.

Ask your doctor for Zovirax, which is an antiviral medication. It comes in tablets and should be taken as soon as the cold sores on your tongue appear. It is also helpful in preventing new outbreaks if you find that you are susceptible to them.

Suck on some vitamin C chewable tablets. Do this a few times per day. Not only will it help with the pain, but it will also boost your immune system to fight the virus.

Use a product with lemon balm (see resources). Lemon balm reduces the pain of the cold sore and softens it. It is all natural and can be used five times per day until the cold sore is gone.
