Cold Home Remedy for a Child

No good parent welcomes the notion of her child getting sick. It instills a natural worry that is difficult to prevent. One of the most common illnesses children endure is a cold. Most colds are fairly easy to treat. However, if proper care is not administered, a cold can develop into bronchitis or pneumonia. For decades, parents have turned to home remedy treatments to cure colds in children.
  1. Garlic

    • Garlic is a known cancer preventive, blood thinner and antioxidant. Though the smell can be off-putting for children, it does wonders for the common cold. Peel about five or six cloves of garlic. Using a string of thread and a needle, make a necklace with the peeled garlics and put it around the child's neck. The garlic's poignant aroma helps to clear the sinuses and loosens congestion.

    Coconut Oil

    • This is for massage therapy. Preheat the coconut oil, then trickle some over the child's chest. Gently massage this area for 5 minutes. Repeat this process on the child's upper-back area. Make sure there is no wind (air conditioner and fans) blowing on the child. The coconut oil massage supplies the child with a good night's sleep.

    Ginger Tea

    • Regular green tea with a couple drops of ginger juice helps to speed up the recovery time. If you prefer, use ungrounded ginger and water. Simply crush the ginger or dice it up. Then boil the ginger with water. Once it cools, add 1 tsp. of sugar before serving.

    Honey

    • Honey is regarded as the best cough fighter. The syrupy thickness coats the irritant receptors and is an effective guard against dry cough. It also contains a high level of antioxidant. Children under 5 years old should be given 1/2 tsp., ages 6 to 11, 1 tsp., and older than 12, 2 tsp.

    Saltwater

    • Saltwater treatment should be given to older children who are not afraid of the gargling experience. The inflammation caused by the common cold is created by bacteria and other germs. The saltwater pulls the water from the infection while destroying other germs that have settled in the child's system.

    Elevation

    • Place rolled up towels or clothing under the mattress where the child's upper body will rest. This puts him in a position where his head and chest are raised while sleeping, reducing postnasal drip.
