How to Cure the Stomach Flu

There is no cure for the stomach flu, other than simply time. It is an intestinal virus, formally known as Viral Gastroenteritis. Like all viruses, the stomach flu doesn't respond to antibiotics as bacterial infections do. Generally, the stomach flu passes within two days; however, if you have a rarer form of the virus, it can last up to 10 days. While there is no finite cure, there are many things you can do to alleviate symptoms. With proper care, you can treat your stomach flu and feel much better as a result.

See your doctor. If you have a severe case of the stomach flu, your doctor can give you prescription medications to alleviate your symptoms. Anti-nausea medications can treat vomiting and diarrhea, and pain medications can alleviate cramps.

    • 2

Drink lots of fluids. Because the stomach flu often causes diarrhea, dehydration is a serious concern. While water is best, you can drink any clear fluids. Sports drinks are also good choices since they contain electrolytes, which aid the hydration process.

    • 3

Keep your diet simple. Avoid greasy, salty or high-acid foods. Stay away from alcohol and caffeine altogether. Since your stomach is particularly sensitive when you have the flu, stick to bland foods such as crackers, bread and broths.

Rest. Your body's immune system is working hard to recover from the stomach flu so you must get adequate rest. In addition, your caloric intake will be down so you won't have your normal energy levels. When you have the stomach flu, try to sleep between two and six hours more than you normally do.

Try natural teas. Chamomile tea can be used to settle an upset stomach and ease cramping due to the stomach flu. Peppermint tea can be taken to ease gas pains associated with the stomach flu. Ginger tea can help soothe nausea. In addition, all herbal, non-caffeinated teas will help to keep your body hydrated.
