Natural Cures for Flu & Colds

Colds and flu viruses have no known cure. The best approach is to simply ride them out. Relieving many of the key symptoms--sneezing, coughing, sinus congestion and runny nose among them- -will alleviate suffering. Here are a number of natural methods approved by the AMA and most medical organizations.
  1. Drink Plenty of Liquids

    • Water and fruit juice keep your throat and nasal passage moist, which helps to break up mucus. Fruit juice also contains Vitamin C, which works as an antibiotic.

    Salt Water

    • Warm salt water can help treat a sore throat by loosening mucus and keeping the passages moist. Gargle it, but don't swallow.

    Humidity

    • Warm, humid air reduces congestion and can eliminate a runny nose. Inhale steam from hot water or take a shower. When exposing yourself to humidity, be sure to inhale through your nose.

    Rest

    • The less activity you undertake, the more energy your body has to fight the virus. Stay off your feet when you have a cold and avoid engaging in any serious activity.

    Nasal Sprays

    • Natural nasal sprays can be made by mixing 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon salt into warm water. You can then gently spray it into your nose with a bulb syringe and allow it to drain.
