How to Use Mucinex

Mucinex is often prescribed for conditions related to colds and allergies. The product works to loosen congestion in the throat and chest so that excess mucus can either be coughed up or blown away through the nose. It also contains pseudophedrine, a popular decongestant that can help shrink the blood vessels of the nose. This makes breathing easier, especially at night when congestion can cause problems. However, although Mucinex is an over-the-counter prescription, it still has dangerous side effects consumers should keep in mind.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that Mucinex is the right product to use. Do not use any product, even the over-the-counter variety, without knowing whether or not it is advisable. Consult a physician for a proper diagnosis.

    • 2

Follow the dosage instructions the physician provides if there is a difference between those he offers and the dosage provided on the product label. Take only the prescribed amount of the drug and only at the times established by the doctor. Always take the medication with a full glass of water.

    • 3

Educate yourself about conditions the drug may aggravate. These include kidney disease or high temperatures that are sustained over a long period of time. Women who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant should not take Mucinex. Neither is it advisable for those who are breast-feeding. Discuss these conditions with the physician at the time of prescription to determine whether you need an alternative drug.

    • 4

Ask the doctor about possible interactions with other drugs. Inform her of all drugs you are taking, including over-the-counter medications.

    • 5

Learn to recognize the possible side effects of the drug. Some of the most common include nausea and vomiting. In some instances, the medication can have more dangerous effects, such as swelling or itchy skin, a rash or even hives. The medication can even make it more difficult to breathe in some cases.

    • 6

Take any catch-up doses of the medication as soon as possible. If it is more than halfway through the time between dosages, wait until the next dosage time.

    • 7

Go to an emergency room if you overdose on the medication. Calling the local poison control center is another option.

    • 8

Contact a physician if the medication doesn’t appear to be working or if any unusual side effects occur.
