How to Relieve Cold Symptoms

Catching a cold is no fun. It can happen without notice and can wear you out. The general symptoms of colds are headaches, nasal congestion, sore throat, runny nose, cough and fatigue. These symptoms can be very uncomfortable for both children and adults. If you are unfortunate to catch a cold, here are some ways to relieve your cold symptoms.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by eating right. A loss of appetite may be common when you have a cold, but it is important to eat healthy to help you continue to battle the cold. Fruits high in vitamin C and chicken noodle soup are light and good foods for you when you have a cold.

    • 2

Avoid fatty and greasy foods that can be hard on your digestive system.

    • 3

Continue to take your multivitamins. Taking zinc and vitamin C supplements can be beneficial as well.

    • 4

Drink lots of fluid. Warm teas and honey and lemon drinks are both good options. These help to soothe the throat and relieve congestion.

    • 5

Gargle with warm salt water to help a scratchy or sore throat.

    • 6

Shower in water that is as hot as you can stand. It relaxes the body, relieves congestion and helps you to rest better after.

    • 7

Use a cold mist humidifier if your congestion is bad. Also, try using a saline nasal spray twice a day. Both help with breathing and nasal congestion.

    • 8

Use a vapor rub on the chest, neck and under the nostrils to help with congestion.

    • 9

Use over the counter cold medication sparingly and get plenty of rest. The body needs rest more than anything to recuperate and fight the cold.

    • 10

Consult medical help if symptoms persist longer than 10 days and if there is a fever of over 102 degrees Fahrenheit.
