  1. Treat a Child With the Flu

    • 1

Treat fever with nonprescription, over the counter medication like Advil or Excedrin (non-aspirin acetaminophen). If the fever climbs above 104 degree F, however, seek immediate medical attention.

    • 2

Allow the child to get plenty of rest. Let them stay in bed and sleep as much as they can. Restrict movement to very low stress (certainly no running or heavy play).

    • 3

Keep your child hydrated. Provide plenty of water or fluids such as Pedialyte, which are designed to increase or help boost electrolyte levels. Sports drinks can help but be sure to check the drink's sodium content (the lower the better).

    • 4

Administer prescription antiviral medications like Symmetrel or Flumadine. Both are approved for the treatment of flu in children, although it is important to note that they are the most effective if administered within the first 48 hours of the appearance of symptoms.

    • 5

Humidify the air in the room where your child is recovering. Keeping the air humid can help to relieve congestion in the nose and throat, making it easier for the child to breathe. If breathing does not improve or worsens and can not be cleared with traditional over the counter and home remedies, then seek prompt medical attention.
