Types of Assistive Devices for Speech Impediments
There are numerous types of assistive devices designed to help people with different forms of speech impediments communicate effectively. Some assistive devices are hi-tech and involve expense and technology while others rely less on gadgetry. The type and severity of the speech impediment is the determining factor in what type of assistive devices will be most effective.-
Text to Speech Devices
-
Text-to-speech are assistive devices for speech impediments that allow the user to type text into a screen that is then translated to voice and broadcast via a speaker. Many of these devices include picture categories that can be selected to avoid the need to type out long strings of text. Additionally, for individuals with motor-skill disorders many text-to-speech devices can be outfitted with head movement recognition technology.
Stutter-Stopping Devices
-
For people with pronounced stutters, stutter-stopping devices are assistive technologies that can help overcome speech impediments. Stutter-stopping devices may look like an Mp3 player the stutterer carries along with them. They work by playing back the person's voice to them when they begin stuttering so that attention is brought, in the person's own, recorded voice, to the stutter allowing that it be corrected.
Communication Boards
-
Communication boards are low-tech assistive devices for people with speech impediments or impairments. Generally, communication boards consist of a board upon which are written or illustrated words, symbols, phrases, objects or ideas. By pointing at or highlighting different aspects of the board, a person with a speech impairment can order ideas and communicate thoughts, needs and desires. Communication boards are always works in progress and will need to be modified or replaced as the user's communicative needs and abilities change.
Flip Books
-
Flip books are another low-tech assistive device for individuals with speech impediments. Flip books contain lists of vocabulary, ideas and symbols sorted by categories that can help not only individuals with speech impediments but also teachers and communications coaches. Because of their small size, flip books are highly portable. They can be purchased or made from existing photos or pictures. Flip books are often used in conjunction with assistive devices for developing speech.
