What is Phonophobia?
Phonophobia is an intense fear of specific sounds. It is a specific phobia, which is an anxiety disorder characterized by an excessive and persistent fear of an object or situation. The fear of certain sounds can range from mild discomfort to severe panic attacks, and can significantly interfere with a person's daily life. Triggers for phonophobia can include loud noises, such as traffic or construction; sudden, unexpected noises, such as a door slamming; repetitive noises, such as a ticking clock; and even certain voices or accents. In severe cases, people with phonophobia may experience physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, increased heart rate, and difficulty breathing when exposed to the sound they fear. Treatment for phonophobia typically involves cognitive-behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, and relaxation techniques.
