How to Recognize Signs of Depression in Your Preteen
Depression is more common in preteens than many people realize. Symptoms may resemble those seen in depressed adults, but some symptoms may vary. Behavioral problems are common. Not all preteens suffering from depression will demonstrate all possible symptoms. Preteens and teens showing signs of clinical depression, which is different than just feeling down in the dumps for a few days, should receive professional help. Watch for signs that your preteen is having trouble concentrating, such as a drop in grades in school or difficulty watching an entire movie or reading an age-appropriate book. He may even have difficulty following a conversation.

Ask your preteen if he is feeling depressed and if so, ask if he has thought about hurting himself or killing himself. Asking won't give him the idea or encourage him to do it if he has not already thought of it, but it will give him an opening to discuss his feelings.
