How to Encourage a Depressed Person

Watching a friend or family member deal with depression is often difficult. You can help your loved one by providing support and encouragement during his time of need. Though it may be hard at times, try to stay positive and supportive, even though your loved one might not show his appreciation for your attempts.

Instructions

    • 1

Encourage your loved one to seek medical attention. Often, a depressed person is unwilling or unable to seek treatment on his own. Offer to set up an visit with a family doctor or psychiatrist, or go with him to his first appointment for support.

    • 2

Provide support and assistance with daily living tasks. Ask if there is any specific tasks that your loved one needs help with, such as grocery shopping or cleaning the house. Help him complete daily tasks that may now be a struggle. Encourage him to exercise and go out with you, but do not force a depressed person into a situation that he is not comfortable in.

    • 3

Take suicidal thoughts seriously. If your loved one talks about suicide, death or self-harm, or talks about getting his affairs in order or saying goodbyes, he may be considering suicide. Discuss his feelings and do not leave him alone if you feel he is at risk of committing suicide.

    • 4

Support your loved one's recovery efforts. When you notice your loved one completing a task that he has not done in a while, note his efforts with a positive statement, such as, "I appreciate that you are helping out by doing the laundry." Avoid making statements that may be construed negatively, such as, "I was wondering how long it would take for you to do the laundry again."

    • 5

Remain patient. Depression often causes sudden mood changes or unexpected behaviors that your loved one is unable to control or predict. Remember that his behavior is a result of the depression and try not to become frustrated or annoyed with him, though you might be angry or frustrated.

Take time for yourself. Encouraging a depressed person is often a draining experience, but you should not put your life on hold to help your loved one. Set clear boundaries and seek support for your feelings and emotions as well.
