Tips to Overcome Sadness
Everyone experiences sadness at some point in life, whether it be due to a death in the family, divorce, fight with a loved one, or a number of other reasons. The sooner you learn how to deal and cope with those sad situations, the sooner you'll be able to find happiness.-
No More Negativity
-
Recognize your negative thinking patterns. Train yourself to identify what triggers these thoughts and avoid that situation or place. Once you take notice of your negative thoughts, you can begin to control them, stopping the cycle of negativity.
Focus on the Positive
-
Make a list of all of the things you are thankful for. Add to that list the people in your life that you appreciate. Hang that list in your bedroom or bathroom to serve as a daily reminder. Focus on the positive things in your life -- even the small ones.
Try Something New
-
Remember that yoga class you always wanted to take or that recipe you wanted to try? Start something new and learn from it. The sense of accomplishment you'll feel when you're finished will overwhelm any sad feelings. Never stop learning. You could meet new friends at yoga class or host a dinner party with your new recipe. New talents offer new opportunities.
Goals
-
Set goals for yourself. Visualize what you wish to accomplish. When you start thinking about achieving goals, this can take your mind off of feelings of sadness.
Get Some Rest
-
Get a good night's sleep. You need energy to overcome negative emotions, so make rest a priority. Do not watch TV as you fall asleep. It can be distracting for your brain. Turn off your cell phone for undisturbed sleep. Set a relaxing tone in your bedroom. Take a bath to relax your muscles. Light some candles for softer lighting. Do whatever it takes to sleep the recommended six to eight hours a night.
Exercise
-
Engage in an exercise routine that includes one hour of cardio. Physical activity boosts endorphins, which are the brain's natural mood boosters. Go for a walk with a friend and get some social interaction and exercise all at once. Just getting out and breathing fresh air is good for your body, as is as a change of scenery.
