Building Self Esteem in Depressed Children

1
Set a good example for your child by exhibiting self-confidence and high self-esteem. Don't just talk about things you don't like about yourself, but include things you like about yourself. When you constantly make negative comments about yourself, you will notice your child mirroring that negative self-perception.
-
2
Concentrate on your child's effort, instead of his success. It's exciting when your kid makes the team, but it's important that he knows his hard work is as appreciated as the fact that he made it. In the future, if your child doesn't get something he worked for, he'll know he's still loved and appreciated.
-
3
Correct your child when she makes disparaging remarks about herself. Do not let those comments go by without saying anything or it will appear that you agree.
-
4
Help your child to find things that he enjoys doing. When your child is happy and enjoying an activity, there is less of a chance for his negative thoughts to enter in his mind.
