How to Survive Depression From a Divorce

Divorce is a difficult transition. No matter the reasons for the divorce, it is the end of one part of your life and the beginning of another. It's understandable if you are dealing with depression as the result of the divorce. But remember: You will eventually recover from the depression.

Discuss your feelings. This can be done with a friend or family member. If your depression is severe, you should consider speaking with a medical professional. You are grieving the loss of your marriage, and talking about it is cathartic, especially with a professional, who is well-equipped for your particular state of mind.

Take time to relax. While you are dealing with depression from a divorce, you need to give yourself permission to be less productive and to rest more. Pamper yourself when you can. Eat well, take bubble baths and splurge on pedicures.

Join a support group. Meeting people in similar situations can help you feel accepted and not so alone. While talking to your family and friends is helpful, relating to others in your situation is therapeutic.

    • 4

Regularly remind yourself that you have a bright future ahead of you. It's hard when you are grieving the past and the hope for a specific future. Focus on other goals that you have, outside of your marriage.

Avoid drugs and alcohol. You may be interested in using them as a way to escape the pain that you're feeling. However, they can actually exacerbate your feelings of depression and make you feel worse.
