Wellbutrin XL Side Effects

Wellbutrin XL is a prescription medication that is used to treat major depression. According to Drugs.com, the symptoms it treats includes lack of energy, feelings of guilt, inability to concentrate, lack of a sex drive and suicidal thoughts. Drugs.com says, "Wellbutrin is thought to work by altering levels of the brain chemicals norepinephrine and dopamine." As with any medication, there are some side effects involved when taking Wellbutrin XL.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • According to eMedTV, clinical trials have shown that the most common side effects of Wellbutrin are agitation, dry mouth, constipation, headaches, sweating, nausea, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, hearing issues, blurred vision, menstrual problems, high blood pressure, anxiety and fainting.

    Weight Side Effects

    • Also, eMedTV states that up to 13.6 percent of people who took Wellbutrin reported a weight gain (and as many as 28 percent reported a weight loss) of five pounds or more. Wellbutrin often causes changes in appetite and/or nausea, which can both contribute to weight gains or loss. eMedTV also says that changes in weight are a common side effect of depression itself.

    Sexual Side Effects

    • Wellbutrin XL can lead to changes in your sex drive and impotence. eMedTV says that over 3 percent of Wellbutrin users experienced a decreased sex drive, but they add that in less than 1 percent of people taking the drug, sex drives actually increased. Other sexual side effects can be delayed ejaculation, painful erections and painful ejaculations--which are rare. eMedTV says that people with untreated depression often report some type of sexual dysfunction.

    Seizures

    • According to Drugs.com, Wellbutrin XL is associated with an increased risk of seizures. Certain factors can elevate these risks such as a tumor in the central nervous system, excessive alcohol use, previous head trauma, anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders. To minimize the risk of seizures, the daily dose of Wellbutrin XL should not exceed 450 milligrams. Drugs.com suggests to always consult with your doctor about any previous health conditions or current medications before taking any medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter.
