Medicine for Depression & Anxiety
Depression and anxiety is an ongoing problem for 18.8 million Americans, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. A 2004 study published in Psychiatric Services shows that more than one million preschool age children also suffer from depression and anxiety. Zoloft

Zoloft is part of the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) drug class. It works by providing balance for the chemicals in the brain that cause depression and anxiety. Zoloft can be used in children over six-years-old and adults. Possible side effects of Zoloft include insomnia, dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, stomach upset, appetite changes and decreased libido .
Cymbalta

Cymbalta is another SSRI that works in much the same way as Zoloft; however, it can also be used to control pain caused by nerve damage. Cymbalta has not been approved for children under the age of 18 as it can cause an increase in suicidal tendencies. Possible side effects of Cymbalta include insomnia, joint pain, dizziness, dry mouth and blurred vision. Other possible side effects are nausea, insomnia, decreased libido and fluctuations in weight.
Elavil

Elavil is a tricyclic antidepressant used to treat depression and anxiety. Elavil should not be used by children and should not be used during pregnancy as it has been shown to negatively affect a fetus. People taking Elavil may experience trouble concentrating, nightmares, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, decreased sex drive and swelling of the breasts in both women and men.
Wellbutrin

Wellbutrin is an antidepressant used to treat anxiety. Wellbutrin is generally not prescribed for children and the effects on a fetus during pregnancy are still unknown. It should be avoided when breastfeeding. Wellbutrin can cause migraines, insomnia, nausea, dizziness, decreased libido and appetite changes.
Nardil

Nardil is classified as a Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) inhibitor and is used to treat anxiety that includes depression. It breaks down chemicals in the brain that cause anxiety and depression.
If you are prescribed Nardil, read the pharmacy insert carefully, as there is a long list of foods that can cause severe side effects while taking the drug. Users of Nardil may also experience headache, intestinal problems, water retention, dry mouth, sexual dysfunction and weight gain.
