How to Resist Negatives & Discouragement

Being met by negativity and discouragement around a project or life change can cause you to want to give up or to change your thinking about the situation from positive to negative. Before reacting, remember to take a deep breath and recognize the discouragement for what it is, and address the negativity to make sure that you're aware of it so doesn't impact you subconsciously.

Instructions

    • 1

Act positively in the face of negativity and discouragement of others. If someone is speaking negatively, answer with positive thoughts and replies. Encourage the other person or group. Don't let the negativity visibly affect you. Also, do not act overtly negative as per your body language in your responses.

    • 2

Listen to the other person to better understand the cause of the negativity and discouragement.

    • 3

Validate the person by explaining how you've listened to them, but be sure to explain why you disagree in a positive way.

    • 4

Turn the discouragement into an opportunity to do something. After you've listened and you understand, offer ways for the situation to be improved or suggestions about how to change for the positive.
