Dealing with suicidal ideations is a taboo topic. People don't want to talk about their thoughts or feelings of suicide. The important aspect to remember, is that you are not alone. Many people have had these thoughts at one time or another throughout their lives and have overcome them. Make yourself a promise. No matter how much pain or sadness you are experiencing when you feel suicidal, give yourself the gift of time. Tell yourself that you need time. Perspectives change with time, and the urgency will begin to fade. You can even put a deadline on that promise of a week or 48 hours.

Avoid drinking alcohol or doing drugs. The use of drugs and alcohol may sound like a good idea or an escape, but they actually increase suicidal ideations and also impulse control. When you avoid alcohol and drugs, your thinking becomes clearer.

Find a safe place. If you are at home and need to make it a safe place, then do so. Remove all things that can hurt you or go to a place where you feel safe.

Talk to someone. Find a friend, counselor, family member, doctor, anyone who will listen and tell them how you are feeling. Don't be alone and remember that face to face interactions are the best.

Burn off your pain or anger by exercising or being outside. It is amazing what the sun and exercise can do for you. Even if you can only do it for 10 minutes at a time, you will notice the difference.

Remember what makes you happy. If you like to read, draw, create, whatever it is that makes you happy, do it. Take time to remember these things and also your goals. Think about how you want to live your future and what you want it to be like. Even though it may feel hopeless right now, you have the power to change it.
