Located in the middle of Europe, Hungary has long been afflicted with an epidemic of depression that has led one writer, Krisztina Fenyo, to call it the "gloomiest nation on Earth."

    • According to the World Health Organization, Hungary has one of the highest suicide rates in the world.

    • Recent surveys indicate that Hungarians die earlier than individuals in most other European nations.

    Perception

    • According to psychiatrist Dr. Bela Buda, Hungarians tend to regard suicide as a heroic act and a positive solution to problems, unlike in other Western nations, where it is often considered a shameful deed.

    Anxiety

    • Approximately 25 percent of all Hungarians suffer from anxiety illnesses. Many of those illnesses are also coupled with depression.

    Causes

    • Dr. Bela Buda believes that the widespread problem of depression in Hungary can be attributed to the vast social changes that the country has undergone since the 1950s.
