Apathy is indifference, and depression is an emotional sadness. While there is not a diagnosis of apathy depression, there is often apathy seen in depression. Apathy is also a resulting condition for certain illnesses.

    • Individuals who have survived a stroke will often display apathy as a result of brain damage.

    Neurologic disorders

    • According to Psychiatry Online, there is a relationship between apathy and depression in patients suffering from neurodegenerative disorders such as frontotemporal dementia and supranuclear palsy.

    Symptoms

    • The symptoms of depression and apathy are similar and can be confusing. Loss of motivation and enthusiasm for life is common to both apathy and depression.

    Mood

    • The distinguishing factor between apathy and depression is the person's mood and level of sadness. Friends and family may have difficulty understanding the difference.
