Depression is one of several symptoms commonly associated with menopause in women. During menopause, a woman's estrogen level drops, which can lead to depression. This can also include anxiety and mood swings.-
General Diet
-
Eating a balanced diet will help stabilize depression symptoms. This includes fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Saturated fats, oils, and sugars should be kept to a minimum.
Vitamins
-
To further help symptoms of menopause, take calcium at 1,200 to 1,500 milligrams per day and Vitamin D at 800 international units daily.
Flaxseed
-
In December 2007, Mayo Clinic noted that research has suggested that flaxseed may help women with symptoms of hot flashes, one of the common symptoms of menopause. Reduction of hot flashes could also lead to a reduction of depression. Further studies in larger control groups are needed to confirm the findings regarding the flaxseed, however.
Fish Oil
-
Fish oil has multiple qualities. It helps fight menopausal depression, and also reduces the risk of breast cancer and high cholesterol.
When To Get Help
-
Women experiencing severe depression during menopause should seek help through a physician or counselor. If suicidal thoughts are present, emergency help should be sought immediately. Options are available to help ease the symptoms, and no one has to experience this alone.
