Medications for Weight Loss, Depression, and Anxiety

Weight loss, depression and anxiety are three things many people experience on a daily basis. Medications, however, effectively treat all three with great efficacy.
  1. Meridia

    • According to emedtv.com, Meridia, or sibutramine, which is a weight loss pill, works by affecting three neurotransmitters in the brain. Most antidepressants affect the same neurotransmitters.

    Stimulants

    • Weight Loss Guide states that Adderall, a stimulant medication used to treat ADD and ADHD, and released in the 1960's as a weight loss drug, is used by many people today. The stimulant qualities of the drug suppress appetite and may even help with depression.

    Benzodiazepines

    • Benzodiazepines, also referred to as Xanax, Ativan and Valium, are sedatives used to treat anxiety and often prescribed with an antidepressant. There are many side effects which may actually overshadow their overall efficacy.

    Prescription Diet Pills

    • Drugs such as phentermine or Adipex, stimulant medications used for weight loss, have side effects including rapid heart beat, insomnia, confusion and agitation that may exacerbate depression and anxiety.

    Tips

    • Depending on the level of weight loss necessary, anti-depressants pose the least threat to the body and are equally effective as stimulant medications. Once stopping stimulant medications, you may gain the weight back and become even more depressed.
