Monnieri Side Effects

Monnieri, also referred to as bacopa, brahmi, and water hyssop, is an herb classified as an aquatic plant. This herb is mainly used in India by Ayurveda holistic practitioners. Monnieri has a variety of uses, but is mainly used for certain mental health conditions. Patients may experience side effects when using monnieri.
  1. Uses

    • According to Insight Journal, monnieri is most often used to alleviate occasional anxiety and panic, to improve mental and physical fatigue, and to improve memory. It is also used to improve immune system response and to improve a person's cognitive functions, such as focus, attention and memory.

    Administration

    • An adult dosage of monnieri is approximately 100 milligrams to 500 milligrams daily, according to Insight Journal. A child dosage is approximately 10 milligrams to 50 milligrams daily. A holistic health practitioner or a doctor will help the patient determine the right dose for them. Patients may not notice any positive effects for several weeks.

    Contraindications

    • Monnieri side effects may become more intense when taken by patients with certain medical conditions. According to Standard Process, patients who are experiencing an acute fever or an acute infection should not take this herb. According to Adam Herbs, other contraindications include hyperthyroidism because this herb may further increase thyroid function. Patients with medical conditions should talk to their doctors before taking monnieri.

    Side Effects

    • Patients taking typical amounts of this herb are reported to tolerate it well. However, in the August 2001 edition of Psychopharmacology, Lloyd, Stough and Clarke discovered significantly more side effects in their double-blind study. Side effects of monnieri include nausea, dry mouth and fatigue, according to the study.

    Drug Interactions

    • Monnieri side effects may become more intense when certain drugs are taken with it. According to Holistic Herbalist, these drugs include morphine, thyroid hormones, phenytoin, barbiturates, blood pressure-lowering drugs, anti-anxiety medications, and antidepressants. If a patient is taking any type of medication, over-the-counter or prescribed, or any other supplement or herb they should talk to their doctor before taking monnieri.

    Risks and Warnings

    • Patients who take more than the therapeutic dose risk overdosing. Certain monnieri side effects will be present in patients who overdose. According to Holistic Herbalist, these include vertigo, headache, weakness, urticaria, and itching. Though monnieri has not been shown to be harmful to pregnant women, breastfed babies, or fetuses, caution should still be exercised.
