Find a bodywork method that is right for you. Some options include yoga, deep breathing exercises, aromatherapy, and massage therapy. A combined approach is usually best. Combining yoga practice with a weekly massage is a great way to lift your mood. Yoga works by solidifying the mind-body connection which many people suffering from depression loose. It also deepens the awareness of your inner self. Massage works by loosening up the muscles and tissues of the body which provides a deep-seated feeling of well-being. Acupuncture and aromatherapy are also commonly used together for similar results.

Learn your dosha. In ayurveda an individual is seen as a combination of five elements also present in nature. These are space, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements are combined in each individual to form what is known as "dosha." There are three main doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. According to ayurvedic tradition, depression is mainly caused by an imbalance in the doshas. An ayurvedic doctor can help you determine your dosha and prescribe you a very specific diet along with common herbs that will help restore your balance.

Take care of your liver. According to Chinese tradition, depression is caused by liver disease or malfunction. Help your liver function at optimal levels with tonics such as milk thistle, water with lemon, and bitter leafy greens. Avoid alcohol which is not only a depressant but also damages your liver.

Take a supplement. Saint John's Wort and Passionflower have been successfully used in alternative medicine for many years to treat depression. Talk to your herbalist for recommendations on brand and dosage. If you are taking prescription medication, make sure to talk to your doctor before starting any supplemental therapy.

Finally, make changes to your lifestyle. Most alternative medicine doctors including herbalists, homeopaths and acupuncturists will recommend certain lifestyle changes in combination with therapy. If you suffer from depression you may lack the motivation to exercise or cook a healthier meal but even small changes will make a huge difference and can be done. Walking for a few minutes each day is a great form of exercise and is said to help boost your mood. Starting your day with a healthy breakfast such as oatmeal and apples instead of only coffee will also help. Self-love is an essential part of healing and caring for your body is one of the greatest acts of self-love.
