Be an active participate in your treatment. Go to all of your therapy sessions and make sure that you follow the instructions for your medications. Learn all you can about depression. The more you know the more likely it is that you will see the warning signs of a relapse.

Set up a support system. You are going to need help to recover from this illness. Communicate with your family, friends, and doctors. Let them know how you are feeling and what they can do to help. Do not be afraid to reach out to someone for help. Surround yourself with people that you know will support you.

Exercise often. The National Institute of Mental Health states that even mild activity can improve the symptoms of depression. Exercise raises the levels of endorphins, your feel good chemicals, in the brain. Even small amounts of exercise will improve your mood. Get outside and do something you like to do with one of your friends or your significant other.

5
Avoid alcohol. Many times people will turn to alcohol when they are going through a rough time. Advertisers want you to believe that drinking alcohol will improve your mood, but research shows that the reverse is more likely to happen. According to the Mental Health Foundation, alcohol reduces serotonin levels which may cause your feelings of depression to worsen. Serotonin, and other neurotransmitters, are what many drugs designed to treat depression are trying to elevate.
