Lexapro Instructions
Lexapro is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SSRI, form of antidepressant that is prescribed to patients with depression and anxiety troubles. The generic name for Lexapro is escitalopram. When taking any prescription medication, it is important to follow the directions carefully to prevent adverse side effects, and Lexapro is no different. There are several stipulations that should be followed when taking Lexapro to have it work as well as it should.-
Before Taking Lexapro
-
Before you begin taking Lexapro, make sure you know the requirements for use and special drug interaction warnings. If you have recently been on any monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or MAOIs, for any reason, then you should not take Lexapro. Taking a drug called Orap also prohibits you from taking Lexapro, as does using Celexa or its generic form, citalopram. Those allergic to Lexapro are advised not to take it as well. You must tell your doctor about any other preexisting medical conditions before taking Lexapro, especially if you have been diagnosed with a manic disorder, epilepsy, liver or kidney diseases, or suicidal thoughts.
How To Take Lexapro
-
As you take Lexapro, be sure to follow the doctor's instructions exactly. Taking more or less than prescribed can be detrimental to your health. With every dosage of Lexapro, drink a full glass of water. To make sure you feel the effects of the drug sooner, take your dosage of Lexapro at the same time daily. It may help to set an alarm so that you know when to take it. If you accidentally miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless the time is too close to the time of your next dosage. If it is close to the time for your next dose, simply skip the missed dosage and take the next dose. Taking double the dose is not recommended.
While taking Lexapro, do not take any pain medications such as aspirin. If you need to, talk with your doctor about what you can take for any pain you may be experiencing. Avoid alcohol with Lexapro, as it can increase the risk of side effects. You also need to avoid driving or similar activities when first adjusting to Lexapro, because Lexapro can make you drowsy. Additionally, to keep from enhancing sleepiness, it is recommended to talk with your doctor if you need to take allergy or cold medication. If you accidentally overdose on Lexapro, call your health-care provider immediately.
