Alternative Cures for Severe Depression

Severe depression, also known as major depression, is a common yet serious medical condition that affects up to 15 million American adults yearly. Severe depression differs from the normal range of emotions such as sadness and anxiety because it tends to last from weeks to months and can severely damage and interfere with an individual's daily life activities. Traditional treatments for depression usually consist of antidepressant medications and therapy. However, there are other home treatments, many involving herbal medication, that may help to prevent or reduce severe depression symptoms.
  1. SAM-e

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, SAM-e may help to relieve depression quicker than prescription medications. SAM-e has also been linked to helping with osteoarthritis, liver problems and fibromyalgia. SAM-e is a chemical found naturally in the body, and works by raising dopamine and serotonin levels. Both dopamine and serotonin have direct links to moods. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests taking 1,600 mg of SAM-e, pronounced "sammy," once a day.

    Omega-3 Fatty Acids

    • Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats, which, according to the Mayo Clinic, may help to relieve severe depression symptoms. Fish oil is especially beneficial when taken with other prescription medications, as fish oil works better for depression than taking antidepressant medication alone. Seafood such as shellfish, salmon, tuna and mackerel contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, as do flaxseed, soybeans and walnuts. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests taking 3 to 9 gm of fish oil per day to help severe depression.

    Ginkgo Biloba

    • Per the University of Maryland Medical Center, studies have shown that ginkgo biloba helps to improve depression symptoms. Ginkgo biloba increases serotonin in the brain, thus promoting a feeling of well being. It also increases cerebral circulation, which helps memory and in turn aids in reducing depression. Ginkgo biloba is the most beneficial for depression in the standardized extract form, and the University of Maryland Medical Center suggests taking 40 to 80 mg three times per day.
