Depression Difficulties in Education
-
Bullying
-
A major reason why some students are depressed is bullying. These days bullying has become more high-tech and severe, and the student feels hopeless and powerless. If the abuse is verbal, this leaves a mark that takes years to recover from.
Pressure From Parents
-
Another reason why some students struggle with depression in school is because their parents sometimes put unrealistic expectations on them. For example, a parent may get upset if his child gets one B on his report card, even if he had As in the other classes. Another example is if the student chooses a career path his parents don't approve of.
Dating Problems
-
If the student is a teenager and his depression is affecting his studies, he may have dating problems. For example, if he was just rejected by his girlfriend and she slanders him, this causes him stress.
Lack of Self-Confidence
-
Students who lack self-confidence often struggle with depression in school. So they either become overachievers or they stop showing interest in classes altogether
When To Seek Help
-
If a student starts having more gloomy thoughts than usual or constantly talks about life not being worth living, parents should not ignore the signs. They should discuss this with the child and if that's not working, then professional help is needed.
